The following item(s) will be discussed, but other topics or questions are welcomed at the time of the meeting and as time permits:

  • Dr. Russell “Skip” Barbour Ph.D. will give a presentation entitled “The Integration of Text Mining with Graph Theory Using R software: An evaluation of substance use in a text messaging network of emerging adults”
    • In this presentation he will demonstrate how network analysis (graph theory) and text mining are complementary to qualitative data analysis, specifically responses to open ended survey question and text messages. This approach can greatly enhance and inform traditional coding and other qualitative methods. We will review the implementation of two R packages “tm” and “ igraph”. The instruction manuals for these packages can be found at the following links:
    • Please do not be intimidated by the technical complexity! Dr. Barbour will review this in very accessible language and simple demonstrations.

The goal of the discussion group is to provide opportunities for individuals involved in qualitative or mixed-methods research to meet regularly to discuss the qualitative research process and potentially problem-solve issues that may arise when engaged in qualitative research. Discussion topics include, but are not limited to: logistics, data management, analysis, dissemination, role of the researcher, and ethics. It is intended as a venue for discussing research in progress and new or relevant literature on qualitative methods and practice as well as to create networking opportunities and foster research collaborations. IRM Core member, Lauretta Grau, PhD, is coordinating the meetings. She can be reached at lauretta.grau@yale.edu.
