A Special Panel Discussion to Commemorate World AIDS Day - "HIV and Refugee Health"

  • On World AIDS Day, CIRA will present a panel discussion on HIV and Refugee Health. The panelists will include:
    • Robert Heimer, Ph.D., Yale School of Public Health
      Panel Title: HIV/AIDS among Refugees and Other Forcibly Displaced Populations: Methodological and Ethical Challenges (co-presented with Dr. Khoshnood)
      Dr. Robert Heimer’s major research efforts have focused on the interface of HIV and addictive disorders in marginalized populations. His investigations have applied methods from molecular virology, epidemiological modeling, quantitative behavioral science, ethnography, and policy analysis to study HIV, hepatitis C, and hepatitis B epidemiology, the pharmacological treatment of opiate addiction, and overdose prevention and resuscitation. Current work focuses on the contexts and consequences of drug abuse and attempts to provide health and prevention practitioners with information needed to assist their educational and advocacy efforts.
    • Kaveh Khoshnood, Ph.D., Yale School of Public Health
      Panel Title: HIV/AIDS among Refugees and Other Forcibly Displaced Populations: Methodological and Ethical Challenges (co-presented with Dr. Heimer)
      Dr. Kaveh Khoshnood has had a long-term research interest in the epidemiology and prevention of HIV/AIDS among drug users and other at-risk populations, including its ethical aspects. His current interests are the epidemiology and prevention of HIV/AIDS and substance use among forcibly displaced populations in Lebanon. Dr. Khoshnood teaches a course at Yale School of Public Health entitled: “Responding to Violent Conflict: Epidemiological Methods & Public Health Interventions”.
    • Mark Lazenby, Yale School of Nursing
      Panel Title: The Concerns of HIV-Positive Cancer Patients Who Have Been Forced to Flee Their Homelands to Botswana
      As an advanced practice cancer nurse, Mark Lazenby's work in Botswana has focused on palliative care. He has conducted a decade's long place of death study to describe place of death in the context of urbanization and the emergence of non-communicable diseases. He also has ongoing work to improve delivery of palliative care to cancer patients who are HIV-positive.
