CIRA Offers Simplified GIS Training using CartoDB

The Interdisciplinary Research Methods Core at CIRA will hold a training workshop on Tuesday, March 19 from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. to introduce the new online Geographic Information System (GIS) application, CartoDB. The purpose of this training will be to show researchers how to quickly and easily map U.S. street addresses using CartoDB. This program offers an easy and affordable way to learn GIS, cartography, web mapping, or data driven applications development. It takes seconds to set up, and since it is browser-based, it works on all modern operating systems. This system is considerably less complex and more user friendly than the standard ArcGIS. The ease of use makes it more suitable for occasional mapping and visualization tasks. During the workshop participants will:

  • Geo-locate addresses of interest by finding Longitude and Latitude using freely available online tools
  • Create a map by putting specific Long/Lat points on a street map
  • Label and format the map

Tutorials and additional information is available at cartodb.com.

Seating will be limited to five students. If you are interested, please contact Skip Barbour at russell.barbour@yale.edu.
