CIRA's 2012 Visiting International Scholar Seminar Series Welcomes Damir Bikmukhametov

CIRA is pleased to welcome Dr. Damir Bikmukhametov to speak as part of its 2012 Visiting International Scholar Seminar Series. The talk, titled Hesitancy To Provide Medical Care to HIV Positive Patients: A Survey of Russian Medical Students, will take place on Thursday, May 10 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.

Dr. Bikmukhametov, Medical Director, Eastern European Branch of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), holds a medical degree from Kazan State Medical University (Kazan, Russia, 2002). After completing a clinical residency and fellowship in Infectious Diseases, he worked at an HIV/AIDS clinic in Kazan, serving vulnerable populations, such as prison inmates and needle-exchange program participants. Understanding the specific needs of the clients and shortcomings of the existing system of healthcare in Kazan, Dr. Bikmukhametov was among developers of a client-centered model of healthcare for HIV-positive people and those who are at risk for HIV. The program successfully functioned in Kazan from 2007 to 2010.

Since 2006, Dr. Bikmukhametov was a faculty member of the Kazan State Medical University, teaching various courses in Infectious Diseases to medical students.

In 2011, Dr. Bikmukhametov completed the Masters in Epidemiology program at State University of New York under a Scholarship from Fogarty International Center. His research focused on HIV-related stigma in medical care, medical education and training.

He is currently involved in a number of research projects devoted to HIV prevention, quality and accessibility of healthcare and related services, hepatitis C treatment availability and others.
