REIDS Program Welcomes New and Returning Fellows to its 2013 Summer Institute

On Monday, June 3, the Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars (REIDS) program will welcome four new and five returning Fellows to its 2013 Summer Institute. The program was designed to meet the challenges and barriers to advancement experienced by groups who are underrepresented in the field of HIV research. The experimental learning component of REIDS will provide opportunities for each fellow to develop skills necessary to engage in community-based research partnerships and advance HIV inequalities research. Each fellow also receives $20,000 to design and conduct a pilot project.

New 2013-2015 REIDS Fellows:

Kamila A. Alexander, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N.

  • Currently: Postdoctoral Fellow, John Hopkins University School of Nursing
  • Proposed Pilot: Mixed methods study to explore gendered affective responses as pathways to HIV risk and diminished emotional well-bring among emerging adult men and women 18-25 that experience (as victims or perpetrators) intimate partner abuse (IPA) and trauma
  • REIDS Mentor: Barbara Guthrie, R.N, Ph.D., F.A.A.N.

Ndidi N. Amutah, Ph.D., M.P.H.

  • Currently: Assistant Professor, The College of Education and Human Services, Department of Health and Nutrition Sciences, Montclair State University
  • Proposed Pilot: Project DASH – Divas Against the Spread of HIV: multigenerational HIV/AIDS prevention study for African American Women ages 13-65, mixed methods research. Program modeled after CDC intervention SISTA.
  • REIDS Mentors: Debbie Humphries, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Donna Cole, Ph.D., M.P.H. M.Ed.

  • Currently: Lecturer, Department of Sociology, Central Connecticut State University
  • Proposed Pilot: Barriers faced by HIV positive women of color and how race, gender, and living with HIV impact their mental health as these are closely linked to lack of social support which adversely impacts adherence to ART.

Yzette Lanier, Ph.D.

  • Currently: Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Post-Doctoral Fellow, Center for Global Women's Health, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing
  • Proposed Pilot: Mixed methods study to identify individual, structural & socio-cultural correlates associated with early and delayed sexual initiation and psychological and social outcomes including depression, stress and substance use, associated with early sexual initiation.  Pilot findings will inform a culturally and developmentally appropriate HIV prevention for African American adolescents.
