CIRA Receives Two Awards from NIH for HIV Research in Puerto Rico

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has made two awards to the Yale Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA) for collaborative research projects focusing on HIV prevention and treatment in Puerto Rico. Research teams from the University of Puerto Rico and CIRA will identify and assess best practices in health communications, self-testing, and linkages to care for people living with HIV (PLHIV) in San Juan. The projects address key pillars of the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EtHE) Initiative - Treat and Respond.

Working with people living with HIV, health care and service providers, and other key stakeholders, University of Puerto Rico researchers Drs. Carmen Zorrilla. Silvia Rabionet, and Marcilyn Colón will address issues related to HIV testing, linkage to and engagement in care, adherence to treatment, and viral suppression. The UPR team will collaborate with Dr. Paul Cleary, Yale principal investigator (PI) of A Study of Assisted HIV Self-Testing and Linkage to Care among Partners of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in San Juan, Puerto Rico and with Dr. Trace Kershaw, Yale PI of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Key Groups about the Undetectable=Untransmissible Message (KAP on U=U) project.
