CIRA’s Research Fellowships Span Career-long Development

CIRA continues to grow as a recognized hub for training, career development and mentorship of scholars from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. This year, we welcome six new Fellows to our Fogarty International Fellowship and five new Fellows to our domestic HIV Prevention Pre and Post-doctoral Fellowship. Our new fellows join an impressive list of alumni and continuing fellows, as well as the mentors, post-docs and junior faculty who participate in the Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars (REIDS)

2013-2014 NIMH Interdisciplinary HIV Prevention Fellowship

This fall we pass on our congratulations to 'graduating' Postdoctoral Fellows Dr. Lisa Rosenthal, who has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in Psychology at the New York City campus of Pace University, and Dr. Elizabeth King, who continues at YSPH as an Associate Research Scientist; and to Pre-doc Fellows Lesley Park and Javier Cepeda, who both secured NRSA dissertation awards for their continued work this year.

NIMH Interdisciplinary HIV Prevention FellowshipThis year we are delighted to welcome Dr. Amy Smoyer back to CIRA. Many will remember Amy as former Assistant Director to the Center's Law, Policy and Ethics Core and Project Manager for several CIRA affiliated research projects. With mentor, training Director and Fellowship Alumnus Dr. Trace Kershaw, Amy will continue her work to build knowledge about incarceration, re-entry and their implications for health. Dr. Kate Falb also joins us this year with her mentor (and Fellowship Alumna), Dr. Jhumka Gupta, whose work investigates gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive health. Finally, we welcome Pre-doctoral Fellows Jeannia FuAlex Bazazi and Maria Altenfelder to our Fellowship program, alongside their mentors Drs. Rick AlticeRobert Heimer and Paul Cleary.

2013-2014 Fogarty International Fellows

Joining us from both Russia and China, the Office of International Training is pleased to welcome six new fellows for 2013-2014 who are working in a wide variety of fields ranging from medicine, psychology, nursing, bioethics, mathematics and computer science. The new fellows joined CIRA during the mid to late summer and most will stay with us until the end of May 2014. They have already shown their enthusiasm to contribute to the program activities by getting involved in their mentors' ongoing projects, attending relevant Yale meetings and seminars, and attending classes at Yale School of Public Health.

Over the coming weeks our new fellows will be engaging with individual CIRA cores and services with a view to developing their networks, strengthening their research, and participating fully in the CIRA community. Please join us in welcoming our new colleagues and making them feel at home!
