New program in New Haven will help in efforts to prevent, treat HIV

The campaign to keep New Haven-area residents free of HIV is getting a boost from a federal grant that will also help identify and treat those who abuse opioids.

Dr. Frederick Altice of the Yale AIDS Program - the infectious disease specialist who brought the Community Health Care Van to New Haven's at-risk neighborhoods in 1993 - has received a five-year $2.5 million grant to expand the efforts to reach young "men who have sex with men," especially men of color, and those who also have substance abuse disorders.
