Professor Madhukar Pai Visits CIRA to Discuss Equity in Global Health

On April 4-5, the YIGH, CIRA, and the YIGH Global AIDS Research Network welcomed Professor Madhukar Pai, Chair of the Department of Global and Public Health in the School of Population and Global Health at McGill University, to campus for a two-day visit to meet with Yale faculty, staff, and students to share his experiences as an epidemiologist, tuberculosis expert, and public health leader addressing health disparities and promoting equitable partnerships in international research.

In a wide-ranging conversation with CIRA affiliates on Thursday, April 4, Prof Pai spoke about his career and his perspectives on global health as a discipline, barriers to the equitable implementation and dissemination of new diagnostics/therapeutics for pandemic infectious diseases from HIV to TB to malaria to COVID, his advocacy for greater equity in global public health publishing as founding co-Editor-in-Chief of the PLOS Global Public Health journal, and his efforts to bridge gaps in research dissemination through print journalism and social media.

On Friday, April 5, Prof Pai delivered the Keynote Address at the Global Health Symposium entitled "Building Equity in Global Health: The Role for Global North” to a packed Winslow Auditorium audience. Prof Pai highlighted how the persistence of colonial power structures constitutes a major barrier to progress in global public health, and emphasized the powerful opportunity for partners in the global North to play as allies to scientists and public health leaders in the global South. More details about the talk including a recording of Professor Pai’s talk is available here.
