What Is 'Masking,' and Is It Harmful? Concealing important parts of ourselves can harm close relationships and cause shame or guilt, said John Pachankis, a professor of social and behavioral studies, at Yale School of Public Health. 

A sweeping meta-analysis of 193 studies finds that hiding one’s sexual orientation slightly increases risks for depression and anxiety but slightly decreases substance use. The impact is stronger in younger groups and when concealment is defined as not being openly out. Bisexual individuals show smaller effects, underscoring diverse experiences.
