CIRA Hosted Two International Visiting Scholars from South Africa and Ukraine

After a 4-year break, the CIRA International Visiting Fellow Program returned this year and hosted two international scholars from South Africa and Ukraine between April 22 and May 1, 2024. During the visit, Drs. Lucy Chimoyi (The Aurum Institute, South Africa) and Iryna Zaviriukha (European Institute of Public Health Policy, Ukraine) presented their respective work at a CIRA-organized seminar, engaged in manuscript preparation and grant writing, met with members of CIRA and Yale community, and attended events including an early-career scientists panel on NIH peer review process and a roundtable discussion with CIRA postdoctoral and predoctoral training fellows.

The annual fellowship program was established to support CIRA-affiliated faculty members engaged in HIV research in international regions with the highest burden of HIV/AIDS to bring a research partner to CIRA and Yale for a short visit to work on collaborative HIV research efforts. In the 12 months following the visit, CIRA continues to support research collaborations between the visiting fellows and Yale faculty hosts and assess productivity through progress reports and virtual meetings.
