HIV Stigma Still Threatens Health of People Living With HIV

A CIRA pilot study has found that despite efforts to eliminate it at the societal level, HIV stigma persists and continues to threaten the health of people living with HIV (PLWH). Ninety-three PLWH completed a survey and results demonstrated that instrumental social support, perceived community support, and HIV identity centrality buffered study participants from the association between anticipated stigma and HIV symptoms. Published in the latest issue of AIDS and Behavior, the study was the result of a fostered collaboration between CIRA Postdoctoral Fellow, Valerie Earnshaw, and CIRA Affiliate, Shawn Lang, of AIDS Connecticut.
