Remembering Denise Travis, a Devoted Scholar and Friend

We are deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Denise Travis's untimely passing on Friday, July 22, 2011. Dr. Travis (seated left with her mentor, Dr. Jean Schensul) had been in Connecticut as a visiting fellow of the inaugural summer institute of the Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars (REIDS), and had quickly become a friend to everyone involved in the program. Our abiding memories will be many and varied - of a woman who was proud of her family, of her endless curiosity as a devoted scholar and teacher, and of her dry sense of humor. We will always feel lucky to have spent this brief time with a talented scholar and wonderful person. At this sad time, the entire REIDS community conveys their deepest condolences to Dr. Travis's family, friends and colleagues. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made for the Dr. Denise Travis Scholarship for Social Work (for details please email D.TravisFund@gmail.com).

Drs. Barbara Guthrie, Jean Schensul, Merrill Singer, Ms. Elaine O'Keefe, and Mr. Jon Atherton -- Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars.
