AbstractA potential confounding factor in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Africa is the frequent occurrence of opportunistic infections (OIs). OI-induced immune activation can interfere with HIV-1 clearance by increasing viral replication and target cell availability.
