Abstract Text:
The overarching goals of the event series are to identify research gap regarding health in humanitarian settings, develop an agenda for future scholarly work, and generate synergies among scholars across the campus and beyond. The proposed goals and event programs are informed by literature, global initiatives, reports, and guidance documents related to the impact of humanitarian and climate crises on health and research in this area, including those led by the World Health Organization, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Fogarty Center for Global Health Studies, and Elrha.
We propose to organize three interconnected academic events comprised of two virtual seminars and an in-person workshop that will engage with the new landscapes of healthcare, particularly related to 1) communicable disease control, 2) sexual and reproductive health, and 3) mental health, addiction, and psychosocial support following major crises in different countries. It will examine how a 'new normal' emerges in care services. The distinctive feature of this academic event series is the focus on both ongoing and consequent damage from a crisis, and opportunities for systems of care development and improvement post-crisis. We anticipate that participants from Yale as well as invited guests from the US and internationally will attend all the events in the series, and overtime, this initiative will lead to future collaborations among multidisciplinary scholars from Yale and non-Yale institutions and organizations.
